Tuesdays Tidbits

Labor Day weekend is over and school is starting tomorrow for T. I will be there with camera in hand with a freshly charged battery. Don't want to lose power on this one as there will never be another 'first day' of school for her. There will be many more firsts in her life but not school.

The vet wanted Buddy to have shoes put on immediately so the farrier was contacted and he went down to see the x-rays. The shoeing was going to be rather unorthodox due to the founder situation as you will see. The farrier arrived and had to remake the shoes as they had to go on backwards. Yes, backwards!

The shoe is on backwards to take the pressure off the toe and support the heel. It will make him much more comfortable until his hoof grows out almost completely. The next picture you can see that the shoe is on backwards as the front part is sticking out the back.

Buddy loves his farrier! heehee!

These next pictures are kind of gross but seeings as I am documenting this whole thing through blogging I have to put them in. Just close your eyes if you want but really it did not hurt him at all and the hoof had to be opened up to get out the stuff that had abscessed.

The purple stuff is medicine, it doesn't really look that way on the inside of a hoof. If you look at the top of the hoof you will see the lighter color and that is the new growth which is Super! We are on our way to recovery but AS I ALWAYS SAY we aren't out of the woods yet. The farrier told Husband that this is called a 'sucker' disease. It suckers you in thinking all is well but it can take a turn for the worse very unexpectedly unfortunately. I will continue to think positively and not let that be an option!

This is Kipper. He was watching the whole thing glad that it wasn't him getting the backwards shoes put on. If you look closely you will see my lipstick on his nose. Do I need to get a life or what????

Monday we went to the lake to close things up for the summer. The water was a bit cool from our 40* nights but D went right in without missing a step. Nice to be young!

T got into the act too not minding the cold water at all.

This is a sign that hangs in our camp. We keep it 'cause we think it is funny. Son had put it on the door one weekend when the kids were out of sorts.

T and her cousin Ashley were out in the kayak.

It was a great weekend. We have so much to be thankful for. Time spent with our family is a true blessing. :o) Until next time!!

We have done those backwards shoes for more support on the heels just not because of founder. They worked great here, hope it helps you out there.

I can't decided if I'm glad or not that school is getting back into session. I hate that summer is coming to an end. Doesn't feel like we had nearly enough of it here.

Wow, I know you're a nervous wreck about that horse. I would be. I'm praying he makes a good recovery.

Buddy looks great. Getting along nicely. I remember how hard the ferrier worked, especially on a hot day. I love the backward shoes. If Buddy is happy, that's all that counts.

Happy you had a great holiday.

Wow that founder is bad stuff. I had no idea. We have dealt with one abscess and it was horrible!

I got home tonight and our pony was out - nice welcome home I had!!!

Glad you got him shod, I will be praying that it fixes the problem. I will say a good farrier is worth his weight in gold! We have a great one and I wouldn't trade him for anything! My mare had a abscess a couple of years ago, that if we did not have a good farrier it could have been bad. But he did a aggressive treatment, shoding, etc. and she is doing great! It did take about a year to completly heal, but I could ride her after about a month. So do not get discouraged if it takes as well. Keep us posted on how the horse is doing.

Glad Buddy got some "new shoes" even if they had to be put on backwards!

Family outings are the best....nothing beats time with our families!

It's been so much fun catching up with your summer fun-filled family activities. I giggled at the family photoshoot, and even read your niece's account. What fun!
Your gardens are still looking gorgeous. We planted a Limelight hydrangea this year, which also turns pink. Like you, I love to dry the flower heads.
I'm glad Buddy is doing so well. Loved seeing these pics of him being shoed.
Spending time with grandkids (especially at the lake!) is one of the best blessings ever. Glad you've been enjoying the summer. Sad to see it end, isn't it?

Sure hope this works for Buddy. I will be keeping an I on your blog to see how it turns out! As for kissing your horse...that is because you "have" a life that he got lipstick on his nose!!!

Our Mustang Cahlibur has pretty sore feet(ring bone)...probably from traveling 1200 miles back to Texas. TnT stopped every 4 hours to let the horses out, give them some water and a short walk. Still it had to be pretty rough on him even though the guys left some old manure in the trailer on purpose for padding.
