Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

We are into day two of snow. There really hasn't been as much accumulation as one would think, maybe 4 or 5 inches. Really was hoping for a foot so that I could get out on my snowmobile, which is still on the trailer, but that is not the case. It is very rocky here and we need a really good base of snow to keep us from hitting them. Possibly more on Saturday, there's always hope! :o)

Have been thinking about how much we loved the snow when we were kids. Poor Dad was out working in it every day so didn't share our sentiments I'm sure but we loved it. It seemed like we got more snow back then or maybe it was just that I was much shorter. :o) We loved to ice skate and had several places that we cleaned off, made a bonfire and skated for hours or until our toes were frozen. I tried ice skating again a few years ago and it was a disaster. My ankles were screaming what is going on here!!!! I wish I had stuck to it and built up strength in my ankles again but I didn't. :o(

We used to go to a HUGE hill called Townhouse Hill to slide. It was about a mile or so from our house and we thought nothing of walking there, sledding all afternoon and walking home. It was a quite steep but an open field so there was nothing to slam into. We had a toboggan that would fit four and we would pile on and go down over that hill just flying! I don't remember all the times we walked back up the hill, now that would seem daunting!

Our sleds were the ones with the metal runners and you could steer them with the hand grips. Now I can't remember what I did yesterday but I vividly remember the day I stuck my tongue on the metal on top of the sled as I was going down over the hill! DUH!!! Oh my was that scary, I thought I would never get my tongue dislodged but finally bit the bullet and just ripped it off. Never did that again, quick learner you know......ahem......

We also used to ride our horses and ponies all winter. Now I'm too wimpy to ride when it's freezing out but back then thought nothing of it. One thing we LOVED doing was to take the flying saucer on a long rope and tie it to the saddle horn and give rides in the fields. We would canter through the snow with the person on the saucer just hanging on for dear life! When we made a turn the saucer would almost pass us. The horses didn't seem to mind at all.

In 1962 we had the storm of the century. The snow was up over some of the windows of the house and the roads weren't cleared for several days. Dad shoveled a path to the street and it was over my head as I was only 10. They finally used heavy equipment to get through all the snow to open all the roads. Now you have to realize we lived WAY out in the country in a little town of about 400 people so we didn't have the latest in road equipment.

Came across this picture while hunting for the snow picture. This was me in my early days. Didn't my mother dress me up cute?! Notice the vintage cars in the background.......they weren't vintage then.....ahem....

My two little gal pals Izzy and Emmy have given me an award! They are the cutest little sweeties and their Mom has a great blog for them. Their button is on my sidebar and you can click on it and it will take you right to their site!

This award comes with a meme that is really fun. List five things that you are addicted to! Only five?!!! I could make a longer list but will stick to the five!
1. Chocolate, of course, who isn't?!
2. Diet Coke in a big glass with lots of ice.
3. My horses and ponies.
4. HGTV Especially House Hunters, I almost always choose the right house. :o)
5. Blogging, go through withdrawal when I am away on a trip!

Now I would like to pass this award on to all my regular readers, I would love to hear about all your addictions!

Please keep the Travolta family in your prayers. I can't imagine what they are going through right now losing their son. Let's just hope that the media gives them their privacy and allows them to grieve without cameras in their faces. Some say that it goes with the territory but I think some things should be just off limits. Here in Maine where they have a summer home the people of the little village where they live give them space and actually protect them which I find admirable.

I seem to remember getting 3 ft. of snow when I was young . . . or was it just that I was only 3 ft. high?

Thank you for stopping in. Your added to my favorites! I'll come back!

I, too, remember the snow fun that we had, but am glad to NOT have it these days. I did the same "dumb" thing that you did with getting my tongue stuck. Guess one needs to do it once in their life. We had a hill at school for sledding and we all brought our old metal runner sleds for recess. Why is it that I can't get that sled to work as well as the newer ones do????

I hope that you get your desired snow before you head off to the OR. It would be a shame to have to struggle with flights to get there....again!

We are enjoying temps in the 70s this week which is my cup of tea after such a cold December.

Enjoy your week. xox

I remember times like that! And ice skating... and sledding... and then riding all over and pulling my brother as fast as Jack and I could go! We made a game of seeing how many times Jack and I could tip Other Brother over in one day. It was amazing. Growing up was very hard at times, but oh the FUN we made! No TV, no video games, no internet, only snow, ice, horses, and the occasional cardboard box, on some big hills. Those were the days!

Loved your meme! Gotta agree about the chocolate, the HORSES!, and the blogging! LOL

HUGE hugs to you and yours!!!

I remember getting a few feet of snow here back in the early 90s, and even though this winter has been the coldest in decades, the snow has been very infrequent. As in once, I think. Maybe it is just too cold to snow! In Switzerland, it is very different, and my sister often has a couple of metres of snow in her garden. We dug a snow cave once...

Wow, the snow! I can't believe it was up to the windows. My mom said when me (or my brother, can't remember) was born, she had to stay extra days because there was so much snow it covered the doorways outside. AMAZING! I've never seen more than maybe a foot at a time.

I've never been ice skating and at my age, I think I'll pass. LOL!

Hope all is well and I am so happy to have passed on the award. You deserve it!

We haven't had much accumulation either from yesterday's snow. The wind was really nasty with strong gusts. Too cold for me! School was closed on Wed. because of the ice. Looks like we got about 3 inches overnight.
I didn't even see snow until I was 18! LOL
I just asked R if he remembered the snowstorm of '62. He does, and he told me stories about trying to uncover the silage in the bunk silo to feed the cows, and get the milk to the milk station in the old jeep.
It's pretty here this morning...still snowing, and the birdies are busy!
That picture of you is so cute :)

I have some similar Minnesota pictures - actually my brothers jumped off the roof into the snow - and got stuck. It wasn't that far from the roof to the snow, but getting out what a challenge! Dumb!

We used to sled down my grandma's hill - the railroad tracks were at the bottom, and I was always scared I was going to go under the fence and land on the tracks. I was a true wimp. Didn't like cold then and don't like it now.

We have no snow left - wind and balmy air, which is weird.

The twins' birthdays have come and gone - we'll party on a week-end. Kev and Sema want us to wait till they get back from Africa. Kristen wrote a wonderful post.

Man that's alot of snow! I don't mind the warmer weather, but it is playing havoic with my allergies!

It is a sad loss for the Travoltas. I agree some things are off limits, but you know the media.

Congrats on the award!

Your childhood in winter is almost identical to mine with the exception that we had barn chores to do and to help Grandma if necessary.

We were lucky. We had a great tobogganing hill right across the road. I will post about it one of these days.

The photo of you when you were little is a real treasure, as is the 1962 snow photo. I think that is one of the only times that Dad didn`t get to work. We also lived way out in the boonies.

I really enjoyed my visit with you. Take care and stay warm and cozy.

Blessings,
Mary

Old memories:) That storm was the last winter I was on the farm before leaving to 'be on my own'. It provided me with a temporary job clearing snow with a CAT dozer for the nearby town that didn't pay much, but was one of the most 'fun' jobs I ever held, ever.

The 'vintage' truck in the photo is about the same year as our 'middle' truck & looks like the same model & configuration. It was still going strong in the apple orchards & gardens along with hauling pulp & hay until the last of the place was sold in 1978.

Not sure about the 'deep snow' issue, I was as tall as I ever got in that '62 storm, & it WAS DEEP!!

Thanks for the look back:)

Oh you are adorable! I love your photo. Hahaha your tongue! We had a little boy in elementary school do that ! So I didn't have to try! I don't mind the snow, I just hate the MUD!!

Your winter and snow reminiscing was so nice. What fun memories. I used to love snow as well when I lived in Austria for 4 years. We had tons of snow to play in there.

Love the picture of you as a little girl. So cute!

Where I live, on a roller-coaster gravel road in the boonies, when there is ice or snow, nothing is done on our road, so we stay home. Well, at least I do! Hope you got enough snow to use the snowmobile. Eileen, who comes from New York, used to spend her winters on a snowmobile, and has fond memories of it.

I enjoyed the meme. Chocolate,HGTV's House Hunters, and Diet Coke would be on my list as well.

Have a great and fun snowy weekend!

Congrats on your award! I remember the huge long wooden tobagans and the wood sleds with metal skis and hand control when I was real little, then I remember the aluminum saucer sleds and the plactic roll ones! OH such fun!

Funny...my daughter just got a meme like that on you tube!

That's one heck of a lot of snow in that old photo. Ours just melted away, thankfully, and I'll be happy if we don't get anymore all winter. I'll ship it your way if we do :)

You know how much I love to share so you're very welcome for the snow!!! hehe We're finally getting some sunny days here but omigosh, it's beyond frigid, especially if you consider the wind chill factor as well. Ugh. I put my nose out the door this morning to get the newspaper and that was enough for me...staying inside all day! lol

I so enjoyed reading your memories of your childhood winters...they could very well have been mine:-) I remember crossing an empty lot to get to our house and the snow would be up to my thighs...but it's like you said, we were short back then! lol Dad use to always make us a skating rink in that empty lot next door or else we'd go to the playground up the street to skate in their outdoor rink. There were also hills there where we would go tobogganing:-) I never did stick my tongue to metal but I remember in school, everyone would dare each other to do so. I was so tempted a few times but good thing I didn't! LOL Poor you, that must have hurt!!

Love the picture of you, weren't you just the little cutie:-)Still are!!

Congratulations on receiving the well deserved award, my friend, and thank you so much for passing it on to all of us:-) Me and you both where chocolate is concerned! lol

My prayers are with the Travolta family. I was so shocked when I heard the news that day and my heart really went out to them. As you say, hopefully the media will let them grieve in peace.

Love you to bits! xoxoxoxo
