Friday Happenings

Can't wait to start planting! It's going to be another month but I can dream!

Dad, Hubby and I just got back from our evening walk. Hubby is doing really well with the injections that he is having in his knee to try to prevent having the knee replacement. He walked the mile that we do twice a day and part of it is a really steep hill. I was going to take the little red wagon to put him in if he couldn't make it........just one push and he would go down over that hill lickitysplit! Speaking of wagons back in the olden days when I was a kid we used to look for pop bottles on the side of the road to take back to the store and get 3 cents apiece for the regular size and 5 cents apiece for the bigger ones. People thought nothing of tossing their empty bottles out their car window when they had finished their soda. They didn't think much about littering in those days and it was a great source of income for us as kids. You could buy lots of penny candy on a good day!

We used to be so excited if we found the 5 cent bottles. It was a gold mine for us!

I loved the wax lips filled with syrup which was just water, sugar and red dye probably! It's fun that you can get the Retro Candy packs now. We received one at one at one of our conventions as they were having a 50's night. Sure brought back memories. Remember Needled Mom?????

Got some pictures from one of my nieces that lives in northern Maine. She and her hubby took some shots of the flooding around their house. They haven't had to evacuate yet and hopefully won't have to. The water looks like it's getting a little too close for comfort though! It's the worst flooding in northern Maine in 100 years. We have part of one road closed but it's at least 25 miles from here.

I rode Buddy down to the river this afternoon and the water was extremely high and the current very swift. We didn't step one foot into it, he must have sensed that something was wrong as he was quite antsy while we were near the boat landing where we usually go in for a drink and some play time. This guy is extremely laid back and just never antsy over anything, well, other then his supper......or any other food that he can beg off you. He can't have carbs so his treats are pretty boring, usually just carrots, but he loves those and is happy.

Dad got the water turned on in the barn for the automatic waterers today and my yard man got the 2X6 floor boards put back down in the stalls. I need to get the rubber mats hauled in them, will do that tomorrow and put down nice deep shavings in anticipation of the boys coming home. Have to make Buddy his own little pasture where there isn't thick lush grass due to his tendency to get laminitis. Poor guy, he loves to eat, just doesn't know when to stop. I sure don't want another summer like last summer with him grass foundering.

Saturday afternoon.

Funsize and I went riding this morning. It was chilly but warmed up as the morning wore on. The river had gone down about 14 feet from where it was yesterday. You can see where the dried leaves are and that's where it was yesterday.

We let them go in for a quick drink but not out far at all. The current was still extremely strong.

I snapped some pictures of Lil' Bud and Funsize. They are quite a pair and can almost read each other's minds. He goes better for her then for anyone!

Now these two horses have been together for years and years but they still snap at each other once in awhile. Look at those ears! When they are away from each other they whinny and bellow for each other, just the nature of the beast.

Guess I should have split this up into two posts as it is rather long but with my memory if I don't write it down when I think of it I forget. Oh how I miss my memory. Now what was it I was trying to remember?

The horses sound just like kids -- it's a love/hate relationship, isn't it?

I had been hearing about all the flooding in Maine. I looked up the towns where the dams were and thought you must be safe.

Perhaps I should post that photo with those red wax lips. Ummmm! A thought!!! That was such a fun convention.

Glad to hear hubby is doing so well with the knee injections. They can't be fun, but sure glad it is working for him.

When do the boys get back?

Those horses remind me of me and the Bossman! You should see me when I lay my ears back.

So glad your hubby is making good progress with the injections. I well remember the soda bottle deposits. That continued well into the early years of our marriage!
Here in CA we pay deposit on almost every beverage container. Do you?
Those flood waters look very ominous. I've been reading about the floods in Maine and the tornadoes in AK. Weird weather this year.
Enjoy your weekend!
love and ((hugs))

Horses certainly have their own distinct personalities, that is for sure. These two are beauties.

We had some flooding here a while back and then the river got really low. We've had 2 days of rain so I'm hoping it will be at its normal level when the weekend is over. It's to continue raining until late Sunday.

Take care. I enjoyed my visit, as always.

Blessings,
Mary

I was sitting here shrieking at the mental image I had of you pushing your husband down the hill in a little red wagon, and then scrolled down a little and there was the cartoon. Oh the tears of laughter!
I am really relieved to know the river is going down. Floods are not good. Have a geat Sunday!

Thank you for your comment on my latest post. I appreciate your kind words. I was going to email you, but see you don't have an email on your profile.

Sometimes random acts of kindness slip through our fingers really fast. The same thing happened to me at Wa*mart in the winter of 2006 It bothered me for the longest time.

Take care and enjoy a wonderful Sunday. The Sun is shining here after 2 days of steady downpour. As long as it's not flooding I don't mind the rain. Our water levels are low right now. The difference in the river is unbelievable from when the water was over the road.

Love your new look. The horses on your banner are beautiful.

Blessings, my friend.
Mary

I have to laugh at the gardener on the top. I can't imagine using a pic like that. It's not that I dont' have a sense of humor. I guess I'm still in denial about my age. I just don't see myself that way. I look in the mirror and wonder who that old woman is. lol

The flooding looks awful. I hope the water retreats quickly.

I used to pick up pop bottles along the road too (along with lots of other garbage). My mom always hated the look of trash filled ditches so we used to walk them quite often. It's one great lesson I took away from her and have passed down to my kids.

Omigosh, your post sure brought back a lot of memories! I too remember walking down all the streets in the neighbourhood looking for pop bottles in the ditch! hehe As you say, how exciting when we would find the bigger bottles...we were RICH!!! We would then hurry up and bring them to the store to exchange for candies:-)

Oh wow, look at the water level...I had seen on the news about parts of Maine flooding. When you see the water creep up so close to a house, NOT GOOD!!

Glad to hear your hubby's knee injections are working so well...hmmmm maybe that's why he didn't want to get in the little red wagon, he KNEW you were going to push him down a hill!! lol

Love all the pictures taken while riding the horses...what a wonderful way to pass the time!! You're making me wish I'd grown up with horses too and could ride:-) Love ya! xoxox

I want your life. Can I have your life? Just kidding but the horses look like so much fun - good and bad. I am glad you got the CD's. Enjoy!

Did you follow the Kentucky Derby stories?

Makes me miss my horses I had when I was a child. I loved having them.

I remember the last time we were in Maine, about 17 years ago, and I always took the bottles back for the 5¢! Loved seeing the old candy. I always liked the little wax bottle drinks!

As to the weather. When we were there last we were staying in a friend's cabin on a pond in the mid-coast area. It was July, and we had to turn on the heat! Here in Texas, we sometimes have the air conditioner on all year!

The old candies have such great memories - those big lips - they were awful, but fun!

Flooding is such a terrible destruction. We had a 500-year-flood on our campus and it was $100 million in damage. Not to mention the Big Thompson flood of 1977. Scary stuff!

glad you and Buddy were out for a ride! horses are like people, sometimes they get annoyed :) I am laughing at those ears!

I bought Wee One some poprocks Sunday, he LOVED them :)

It was so interesting seeing those pictures...even though flooding's not a good thing, they are actually pretty photos. We've gotten some bad flooding on occasion in Oregon- the worst was in '94 I believe. My husband and I were living out of state at the time, but his brother went around with a video camera filming all of it for us and sent it. It was so widespread, too!

Your ride looks so fun...wish I could come over and ride horses with you! (I've only ridden about six times in my life, but that's OK, right?) :)

Oh I have so enjoyed reading your blog that I can't remember when I started this evening. I envy you your horseback riding. Sigh, I was born on the Prairies to a small town Preacher and his wife but I sometimes think the 'blessing' might have been intended for a farmstead down the road.

Great pictures. You all have some great places to go riding. Stay safe from all the flooding.
